TIM commissioned an independent programme report on the Identity Pathway pilot at HMP & YOI Brinsford, compiled by Virtual Elevation. We publish it in full - including what participants told us could be better.

Please note: this report covers a one-off pilot delivered in June–July 2024. The prison-based workshops described are not currently taking place at HMP & YOI Brinsford. The Identity Pathway continues to be delivered in schools, PRUs, alternative provisions, and youth institutions.

64 students. Seven schools. Inside the walls.

Between June and July 2024, 64 students from seven West Midlands schools took part in workshops delivered inside HMP & YOI Brinsford. Sessions were co-facilitated by four young adults serving at Brinsford, trained by TIM to share their lived experience. West Midlands Police (Sandwell) supported organisation and safeguarding, with pre-approved risk assessments and parental consent for every participant.

64Students, across 7 schools
4Trained co-facilitators with lived experience
3 of 7Schools requested & received follow-up sessions
54Feedback surveys: students, staff & co-facilitators

The messenger was the message.

Students consistently identified the co-facilitators' stories as the most powerful element of the programme - many recognised their own circumstances in those accounts, and said so. The most requested improvement? More time with the co-facilitators, longer sessions, and one-to-one conversations. We take that as the strongest endorsement available.

"The impact and realisation of poor decisions."

Student participant

"It was a fun experience because you get to understand the morals."

Student participant

"We were just talking about the visit in the team office this morning. We are really grateful for the opportunity and hope that we can build it into our support programme for students."

Accuracy, not inflation.

This is a delivery and feedback report, not a longitudinal impact evaluation. It captures engagement, participant response, and school demand. Tracked outcome measurement - exclusions, offending, progression - is the next stage of TIM's evidence framework, and we say so plainly because commissioners deserve accuracy, not inflation.
